About 1pm today the sky opened and the thunder shook the hotel. The rain has just poured down all afternoon and I have brought my airport journey forward by two hours to compensate. Nairobi stops when it rains as holes in the road fill up with a foot of water, vehicles break down, get stuck and die. The Matatu buses start using the pavements and grass verges to push and shove down the side of the traffic and then get stuck themselves on kerbs and in the bigger holes on the pavement.
We have been sitting here for almost an hour already and over my shoulder I can still see the hotel. David my driver says that we still have an hour and a half to go to cover the five miles to the airport – Great !
